What are affidavits, sworn statements and notarized documents?
Often times people are asked to obtain these odd obscure terms for changes to your name, professional body requirements, passport applications and more. But what is the purpose of these different processes.
Affidavit: This is a verified statement made by a person. Requires a commissioner of oaths or a notary public. Essentially, when creating an affidavit you are making a statement about a matter. Then it is verified that you were the person who said it by a commissioner of oaths by them taking your ID and making sure it was you who said this.
Sworn Statement: This is essentially the same as above, a statement made that is than verified by a commissioner of oaths or other qualified professional. The main difference lies is that in Canada sworn statements are used for federal applications, affidavits are for all other.
Notarized Documents : A notary public verifies that a copy of a document is true to the original.
